We are proceeding on the basis that the road closure will be 09:30 7 Jan 08. There are some preliminary works but piling could well start that day.
The next Contractor's meeting on Thurs 20 Dec should really confirm this date.

As half expected, Burras has slipped to the week commencing 17 Dec due to recent bad weather.

This is a quick update on progress of the construction of the canal bridge. The principal contractor, C J Thorne of Uckfield East Sussex, will start getting their equipment on site during the week commencing the 26th November 2007. The first job is piling, which will be done by Burras Ltd. Subject to completing previous work, Burras will arrive during the week commencing the 3rd December. To do the piling across the road it will be necessary to close the B2133 and this is expected to be during the week commencing the 10th December.
All traffic restrictions for the works will be removed from the 22nd December until the 2nd January 2008. Single line working, with traffic lights will then continue while the bridge is built.

The long awaited legal agreements have now been finalised. Work can start on building the bridge as soon as the contractors can be mobilised.

The 3rd September 2007 could be pivotal, the holidays are over and everything is going to happen! By then, with all the technical approvals in place, the drawings can be issued 'Approved for Construction'. The finances are in place to cover the contractual aspects. On that day it is hoped that WSCC will agree with our solicitors the Legal Agreement necessary before any work can start. And then to complete the legal side the five landowners involved, the Wey & Arun Canal Trust and of course the West Sussex County Council, have to sign sufficient documents so they all have something for their records.
Next all the contractual documents have to be signed. These will enable the preparatory work by the Contractors detailing how their work is to be done, a requirement of the Health and Safety regulations. These require welfare facilities to be available before work can start. So the arrival of cabins will probably be the first visible sign that things are happening.
With an agreed date for the start of work the Traffic Management Plan can be agreed with WSCC, This will enable the signs to be put up giving the road closure date. A little later the 80+ signs that are required for the traffic diversion around the work site can be put up. With the traffic plan in place, the school buses operated by WSCC and the private schools should then know what they have to plan for.
Next is getting the piling sub contractor off his current job and starting on this most important project. After that no problems, just challenges.
