In the registry of West Sussex County Council bridges, of which there are over 600, 'Drungewick Lane Bridge' is the name of the bridge over the river. The title 'Drungewick Canal Bridge' was rejected because this is not the 'Drungewick Canal'. So the official name was chosen as 'Drungewick Lane Canal Bridge'.

| Diverting water and phone services

Since the road crosses the line of the canal by a culverted causeway,
this had been used to carry services (a water main and BT phone
cables) under the road surface. Before any major site excavation
could take place, these had to be removed and temporarily diverted.

Having dug the trench, each section of plastic water pipe had to be laid and welded together.
| A new pipe welding machine was acquired by the Trust and Phil Bashford from Southern Water explained how it works.

| | | After use at Drungewick Lane, it will be used in future backpumping schemes by Trust volunteers.

| First tests prove positive - at least there IS water in it.

Once the services had been diverted the main contractor, Geoffrey Osborne Ltd came on site. The initial works were site clearance and stripping of the top soil.
