  THE NAME
In the registry of West Sussex County Council bridges, of which there are over 600, 'Drungewick Lane Bridge' is the name of the bridge over the river. The title 'Drungewick Canal Bridge' was rejected because this is not the 'Drungewick Canal'. So the official name was chosen as 'Drungewick Lane Canal Bridge'.

With the foundations laid and concreted the shuttering for the first wall is erected.

- and the first wall is ready.

With both walls completed the 'roof' is constructed. This becomes the deck of the bridge, and carries the road over the canal.

It forms a square box, a shape which permitted an appreciable cost saving.

The concrete is poured in and consolidated with a mechanical poker or vibrator.

This, too, is reinforced with steel rods. These rods are securely tied to each other with stainless steel wire.

With the shuttering up it is now just possible to make out the eventual shape of the arch, which will be concrete with brick facing.

With each pour or batch of concrete, three samples or 'cubes' were taken and sent away to be tested for strength.
