THE WEY AND ARUN PUSH FORWARD

The 33rd annual sponsored walk by supporters of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust
took place on Sunday, 12th June
and raised £12,603.60 towards restoration of this special waterway. The 'Poddle' is the
annual fund raising event of the
Trust which is restoring the Wey and Arun Canal through Surrey and Sussex. This year's route
provided a succession of
beautiful views to Arundel Castle standing high above the River Arun, Amberley Castle, the old
river bridges and pretty
villages along the way. The lunch stop was at Warningcamp.
Jo Beagles, who has organised the Poddle for the last four years said 'After 33
years our sponsored walk
continued to provide an interesting day out. We were lucky to have such glorious weather and a
good turnout of walkers.
It was great to see a lot of familiar faces and also many first timers. My thanks go to all 50 or
so helpers on the day,
without whom the Poddle would not be such a great success'. Pictures here...
Work on the new lock at Loxwood begins this month. Over 75 volunteers during
the summer will hope to
complete the new lock as phase 1 of the project to cross the main B2133 road so that the fully
restored section can be
extended a further 2 miles. Funding for phase 2 which is lowering the water levels will begin
next year and all contributions
would be very welcome. The project is likely to cost in the region of £1.2million, but the
first phase (£360,000) has already
been donated by Trust members and supporters. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is a registered
charity and receives no Government
assistance. The aim of the Trust is the preservation and conservation of the former inland
waterway route between the Rivers
Wey and Arun, with a view to reopening this to navigation and a leisure corridor for walkers to
enjoy.
