Walking the Wey & Arun Canal - new guide published

A new and fully revised guide to the Wey-South Path has just appeared. The Wey-South Path is a long-distance walking route between Guildford and Amberley in Sussex, where it joins the South Downs Way. The path follows the route of the Wey & Arun Canal and the River Arun Navigation as closely as possible, using public rights of way throughout. The route passes through or near Bramley, Cranleigh, Dunsfold, Loxwood, Billingshurst and Pulborough.
The Wey & Arun Canal is a green corridor through some of Surrey and Sussex's most unspoiled countryside. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is restoring the canal for navigation throughout, but studies show that, for every boat using the canal, many hundreds of walkers will enjoy a peaceful stroll along the towpath. Since the first Wey-South Path guide appeared in 1975, a remarkable 15,000 copies have been sold.
Walkers don't have to cover the whole 36-mile route in one outing (although Canal Trust member Bridget Glynne-Jones recently did just that in aid of charity). The guide divides the path into 6 convenient sections, several beginning or ending at one of the waterside pubs (the Three Compasses at Alfold, the Onslow Arms at Loxwood and the White Hart at Stopham). The walks all include a point of interest, whether it's the 'roving bridge' at Bramley (to allow horses to move to the other side of the towpath without unhitching the rope), a turf-sided lock or a restored humpback bridge - there's always something to see on the canal. As well as the Wey-South Path itself, the guide includes descriptions of 10 circular walks that use part of the route.
The revised guide incorporates the most recent restoration projects undertaken by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust, including the ambitious project (now in progress) to reinstate the canal crossing under the main road in Loxwood. It has 68 pages and a number of colour photos. All the walks are illustrated with detailed maps showing the route in red. The new edition has been produced by Wey & Arun Enterprises Ltd (WAEL), a company set up to raise funds for the restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal.
Lyn Nash, from Loxwood, acted as editor-in-chief. Lyn comments: "The Wey-South Path Guide is our most popular publication and it was high time we brought it up to date. We hope to encourage many more walkers to get out and discover the many attractions of 'London's Lost Route to the Sea'. This latest edition owes everything to Geoff Perks and Clive Scott. Geoff walked the complete route several times to make sure that the descriptions were absolutely accurate."
