This year's Wey & Arun Canal Trust annual sponsored walk ("The Poddle") was held on Sunday 14th June 2009 and covered 10 miles, visiting the picturesque setting of Wiggonholt, near Pulborough, Sussex.
The idea for this year's route was in recognition of the part played by the Wiggonholt Association in providing half the funds needed for the Trust's 50-seater electric trip boat named "Wiggonholt", launched in April 2009.
Wiggonholt Association chairman, Peter Flatter, said: "We are very pleased that the walk included our historic little hamlet of Wiggonholt and its beautiful surroundings, not forgetting the lovely 13th century church."
Pulborough Village Hall was the start point for 255 walkers and the 10-mile route, shorter than last year, was ideal for such a sunny day. Of particular interest to canal enthusiasts were:
Stopham Bridge, built in 1403. The centre arch was raised in 1822 to permit boats bound for the Wey & Arun Canal to pass underneath; and
The entrance to Hardham Tunnel and the Arun Navigation cut. The Trust has no plans to restore this tunnel which was built to take 3 miles off the journey.
Due to the kindness of four landowners, the walk was able to pass over private land, including the Parham Estate.
Over 50 Trust members helped the organisers, Jo and Kevin Holcombe, to provide road marshals, refreshment points, and a wonderful lunch for the walkers at Rackham Old School. Jo commented that the walkers were particularly appreciative of the wonderful views the route afforded them this year.
Preliminary estimates are that this year's walk raised more than £13,500. This amount will contribute to the cost of new lock gates for Devils Hole Lock in Loxwood, Sussex.
