Press Release
WEY & ARUN TO HOLD SHALFORD CONSULTATION.

The Wey & Arun Canal Trust's aim is to restore the link between the River Wey near Guildford, and the River Arun near Pulborough, Sussex.

The canal was built between 1813 and 1816 and fell into disuse in the 1870s. Some parts of the old canal are still in water although some are overgrown. Trust volunteers are working to restore these sections. It may be that you have seen some of the restoration work further south near Loxwood or Tannery Lane in Bramley.

There is now a proposal to reconnect the canal to the national inland waterway network at the River Wey just south of Guildford. The work will entail recreating the lost waterway and making it part of a green corridor enhancing the vicinity not only for boaters but also for all who enjoy walking, cycling, horse riding and observing nature.

The Trust is keen to hear the views of Shalford and Bramley residents about the proposals and their priorities.

We will be in the Upper Village Hall at Shalford on Saturday 26th September and Sunday 27th September (11 am - 4 pm) with an exhibition showing work already done further south on the canal and explanations of various options for Shalford and Bramley.

Please do come along and learn more about the Wey & Arun Canal and give us your thoughts.

Further information can be obtained from the Wey and Arun Trust's Public Relations Officer: Sally Schupke (01483 560543): e-mail: pr@weyandarun.co.uk.
