Loxwood new Lock - 4

The top cill on Thursday Aug. 11 2005.

The same view a day later. The concrete beams have been placed and most of the spaces filled with concrete slabs. The whole area of the cill will be covered with 300mm of concrete.

The brick arch for the culvert outlet on the nearside of the lock has been laid. The offside arch is already complete.

The top cill on Thursday, August 18 2005. The concrete slab has been laid and the brickwork above the culvert outlets raised by eight courses. When the gate mitre is fitted on the concrete slab it should be at the same level as the bottom gate mitre at Devil's Hole lock. (Photo: Richard Emsley)

Saturday, August 20, the sheet piling was pulled out using the vibrating hammer/puller. The excavator and hammer were on self drive hire to the Trust. Note how the balance weight on the rear of the excavator overhangs the lock chamber walls. The building of the walls had been limited to 900mm to allow for the overhang. Now that the piles have been removed, wall building can continue to full height. (Photo: Rob Taylor)

Sunday, August 21, a view of the lock from the head end with almost all the sheet piles removed.

Only the last few piles remain to be be pulled out. As the piles were pulled each one had to be cleared of mud on both sides, as shown in the foreground.

The 'easy' way to put fencing posts in.

Scaffolding being erected on Sept 1, 2005.

The nearside (towpath side) chamber wall is being constructed first as this will then make access for concrete pouring to the offside easier and will avoid the use of a concrete pump.
