EDITORIAL COMMENT ~ Steve Jones

As you can see by the headline 'Mrs Bucket' has very kindly sponsored the anticipated costs of producing 12 editions of W.P.News. Andrew Neden has also kindly made a donation; which will cover any overrun of costs such as may occur with the impending postage increase.

Continuing with our '10 years ago' review, the Mid Week Working Party was "achieving amazing progress" clearing north from Baldwin's Knob Lock to Brewhurst. Lane in just 2 days. The first Dig Deep camp was held in Sidney Wood on March 1 and 2 with approximately 10 volunteers from London WRG attending. Despite a wet Saturday work was undertaken to improve the designated access track to the canal, including replacing a collapsed culvert and forming a hardstanding for the intended 'base camp'.

Preparatory Work Starts on Drungewick to Newbridge ~ Eric Walker

At Devil's Hole Lock the work at the top sill is continuing, as it will for some time, subject to the other important jobs getting ready for the boating season and the commissioning of Drungewick lock. Time has been spent pumping down Brewhurst Lock to enable Peter Wilding to inspect the bottom of the gates and reinstall the paddle gear. Naturally a lot of time was spent preparing the pumps and Colin Gibbs has reorganised the depot at Tickners Heath so that in future such work can take place under cover. On the day we pumped the lock out we had one swimmer, should I say more!

With the work by Richard Julian at the aqueduct finished, and the railings fitted, there only remains the fitting of the rubbing boards. Volunteers will do these. In the middle of March the cable to take electricity from the slipway to Drungewick Lock arrived. Weighing three tons it posed a small logistics problem, which at the time of writing is yet to be solved along with several other interesting problems.

Colin Durbridge has volunteered to help with the installation of the control gear for the pumps at Drungewick. Again there are a number of similar jobs later in the year at Baldwin's, Malham and Rowner, not to mention the reconnection of the pump across the B2133 at the Onslow.

Block making has commenced at Tickners Heath in preparation for the swing bridge at Hope Farm. We will probably need about 200 blocks. So at 10 a time that's quite a lot of work. The survey went quite successfully and the plans been produced for Alan Johnson to prepare the planning application for Horsham District Council.

Subsequent to a survey at Drungewick Lock the outline for the winding hole was produced and John Verral gave us a very competitive bid to make the winding hole, so work will begin there before the end of March. Included in the contract was an element to help put the gates in place when they arrive on the 1st or 2nd of April. Again, at the time of writing preparation of the lock has yet to be completed.

The Thursday & Sunday Groups (TSG) meet at 09:30 at the Onslow Arms, Loxwood. Lots of jobs, mostly construction related. For more details contact Eric Walker Tel/Fax 023 9246 3025 or yet another email address: ericwalker@onetel.net.uk

Layed Up ~ Keith Nichols

Here I am with my feet up at last - courtesy of the NHS. Yes it's painful with a left knee replacement plus an 'op' on the right knee as well but 'Say Luv Vie'! (What do the French know?).

My last report on the hedge laying is in Wey South covering up to the end of January 2003 so you should have seen that by now.

For those that haven't been past it, (most of us are past it) February saw another 80 metres cleared and 89 metres layed. By Tuesday 4th March, my last day, a total of 350 metres had been cleared and 311 metres layed and all the replacement saplings had been planted ie 110 trees.

Total Man Days to date being 52; which includes approximately 5,000 square metres of coppicing. So all in all, I think it's gone really well so far. If anyone wishes to have a go I will act as a 'go between'/ 'whip cracker'. Contact me on 01403 753882. Best of luck team.

The Phantom Mattress Dumper Strikes Again! ~ Brian Crossley

The Group would like to interview the person who off-loaded another double-bed mattress into the ditch at Run Common between December 13 2002 and January 31 2003.

It is no easy task to manhandle waterlogged bedding into one's family saloon to take it to the Cranleigh Dump. So if the unknown person or persons will kindly contact Mrs Hyacinth Bucket, she will be pleased to allow them to decontaminate, clean and polish her automobile.

The litter pick is always an essential part of 'keeping up appearances' but fortunately it usually doesn't take a lot of time. Then we can get on with our major task of mowing and strimming the road crossings (being careful not to behead a daffodil until six weeks after the flowers are over). Good PR work in good company.

Meetings in April will be on Monday 14th & Friday 25th (yes, Friday - to take enable members coming from a distance to attend the AGM in one journey). Just ring me during the previous week for details.

Where's the Dam? ~ Colin Gibbs

Clearance along both banks north of Fastbridge, has taken three more visits to complete. I originally estimated the length of canal to be cleared as 850 yards; it actually turned out to be nearer to 1100 yards. Working northwards, our limit was the dam on the northern boundary, which as you can imagine never seemed to get any nearer.

One more visit to Dunsfold Park (airfield) and another to Toat, has seen the winter clearance for both sites completed. The end of March sees the group looking for summer jobs - fencing perhaps! But, not too many offers - we need a rest!

Working Party Diary for April and early May.
