EDITORIAL COMMENT ~
Steve Jones
Over the last few months there have appeared quite a few articles in various journals about various forms of alternative energy, one of these was by the combustion of sustainable forest products. Interestingly this idea was being considered by Forest Enterprise for Chiddingfold Forest; which includes Sidney Wood. With the possibility of development of the old British Aerospace site at Dunsfold with perhaps it's own local generating station, what better time to promote forest products; which could be transported in an environmentally friendly way along the canal.
Water Wheel Wonder ~ Winston Harwood.
What more to say. We set it in motion on March 16th and could only stand in awe as it rotated
effortlessly, lifting huge amounts of water with only the splosh, splosh of the driving water hitting
the vanes. The water output is a fantastic, never in a million years dreamed of, 1800gph at a very
lethargic 2rpm. Other tasks have been the continuing creation of a picnic area and the salvaging of
fallen copingstones, from the mud of Lordings Lock. Work continues with the rebuilding of the lock
and we will shortly commence building the 2 slipways in readiness for the open day on May23rd. We have
also installed a loo on the site (is this a first?). It is once again possible to drive down to the
site, so perhaps we can look forward to seeing a few new faces. We're there every Tuesday and
Thursday.
